Cabbage is part of the Brassicaceae plant family. It is a cool season vegetable that is easy to grow. Cabbage is great for stews, soups and salads. You can also make homemade coleslaw or fry cabbage as a side dish.

When to Plant and How to Grow Cabbage
Cabbage is a cool-season vegetable. In Phoenix or gardening zone 9b Plant seeds indoors in the month of September or December. Transplants can be planted in the months of January, February and October.
Cabbage can need a spread up to 12 inches and grow up to 18 inches in height. Allow two feet of space between cabbage plants.
If planting by seed they only need about 1/4 inch of soil on top. Seedlings will emerge within a few weeks.
Companion Plants for Cabbage
Cabbage does well when planted near aromatic plants. They like to be near onions, rosemary, dill, thyme, peppermint and sage.
Cabbage doesn’t like to be planted near beans, strawberries, or tomatoes.
How to Care for Cabbage
Light Requirements: Cabbage like most vegetables requires full sun or about 6 – 8 hours of sun a day.
Soil Requirements: Prefers fertile well-drained soil. Cabbage is a heavy feeder and can benefit from compost being added to the soil. It slightly acidic to neutral pH. The soil pH range of 5 to 6 is ideal.
Water Requirements: Cabbage likes moist soil. Water deep and do not let the soil dry out.
Apply a couple inches of mulch around cabbage to help soil from drying out.
When to Harvest Cabbage
From seed to harvest cabbage takes 60 days to 75 days depending on the variety chosen.
